Vib: Eh YS, why you apply Sime Darby Scholarship when you are not planning to study overseas?
YS: You mean they only offer overseas?
Vib: Yes, you go check…
YS: Oh shit, they really only give overseas…
Vib: Later you get it then it’ll be real funny
YS: When they get back to me I’ll tell them I applied wrongly…
Sometimes I wonder if I’m being over-enthusiastic about studying abroad…
While my blog seem to languish in neglect the fact is my life is busier than ever. I find myself always having difficulty finding things in my life to blog about when I’m too free and then not finding time to do the blogging when I’m really busy and have so much things to write about. So in both cases, my blog seem to be destined to suffer. I haven’t quite been reading much besides the recent stuff on finance, Lord of Finance and The Partnership.
I did do a lot of writing outside ERPZ, which kind of explains my inactivity there as well. Work has been quite heavy for me and there seem to be endless things for me to do at work (both my regular and personal). In many sense that is good, but it is the focus on excellence that ironically keeps work coming as well. I found this paragraph I wrote on a slip of paper with something I scribbled a while back to remind myself of this great quote I found during my reading:
Success bases our worth on a comparison with others. Excellence gauges our value by measuring us against our own potential. Success grants its rewards to the few but is the dream of the multitudes. Excellence is available to all living beings but is accepted by the few. Success focuses its attention on the external – becoming the tastemaker for the insatiable appetites of the consumer. Excellence beams its spotlight on the internal spirit. Excellence cultivates principles and consistency. – Jon Johnston, Pepperdine Sociologist
Not that I’m a pure supply-sider economist but right now the life I’m living is totally advocating full personal productivity and maximizing work. Somehow it seems as though I convinced Kwang Guan about the virtues of work.
Life of busyness picks up again as I try to utilize my potential. One never seem to be able to escape from the cycles of tough and ease in life. Perhaps, we’re indeed Sisyphus.
After the ‘greatest motivation quote‘, I came up with a couple of further additions to my creed, which I’m hoping to finalize and print out as a card to be inserted in my wallet and possibly be given out as gifts for others.
Vib’s Creed
Never hesitate to show contempt for procrastinators, slackers, and poorly motivated individuals.
Never be overwhelmed by gloom and doom. Distant from those who are.
Be motivated by the virtues of work and life and not deterred by the fear of punishment.
Be lazy but work hard to slack later. Work harder so as to slack even more.
Courage is not having no fears. Courage is having fears but doing it anyways. Practice courage.
Goodness is the enemy of Greatness. Never be satisfied with just being good.
Interestingly Xiayan was telling me he keeps my creed in his handphone to remind and motivate himself. Well, for a start, I’m inspiring people.
